Israel says it destroys Hamas tunnel using new techniques

Tension has increased over the weekend around Gaza, as Palestinian groups launched rockets on Israeli targets, Israeli warplanes retaliated against Hamas targets and the Israeli military destroyed a large tunnel excavated under the border.

The Israel Defense Forces discovered and demolished a terror tunnel that crossed into Israel from central Gaza.

During the 2014 summer war with Israel, Hamas terrorists on several occasions made their way into Israel through terror tunnels, although they did not manage to reach civilian areas.

This is the second such tunnel from Gaza destroyed using the new Israeli system in six weeks.

Conricus described the tunnel as "very substantial", saying it contained communication systems, air vents, electricity and reinforced concrete structure. The system was first used to detect a tunnel that was destroyed on October 30, but other aspects of the system were used this time around, he said.

An IDF spokesperson announced that the tunnel ran from Khan Younis several hundred feet into Israel's Eshkol region. His Intelligence Minister, Israel Katz, said the army action conveyed a clear message that "the era of the tunnel threat is nearing an end". It was located about a kilometer from an Israeli community. "It is by no means behind us, but this will surely force the terrorist organizations to change techniques and to adapt".

He also stressed the tunnel had been in the works for some time and was not linked to the recent clashes and protests over last week's declaration of Jerusalem as Israel's capital by Trump. On Friday, two protesters were shot dead in skirmishes with Israeli troops along Gaza's border.
