Jordan also referred to Peter Strzok, an FBI agent and former deputy head of counterintelligence who led the investigation into Clinton's use of private emails, and reportedly recommended that former FBI director James Comey describe Clinton's actions as "extremely careless", rather than "grossly negligent" - a term that implies felony charges under USA law.

Wray was appearing before the the House Judiciary Committee Thursday, after President Donald Trump's recent tweet that the FBI's reputation is "in tatters".

They intensely focused on revelations that came to light last week about Peter Strzok, a high-ranking FBI agent who worked on both the Hillary Clinton email probe under former FBI Director James Comey and Mueller's investigation of Russian interference in last year's presidential election and possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Another lead FBI agent in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation is being accused of political bias, the Wall Street Journal reported. You could clear it all up for all of us here - all the Congress who wants to know, and frankly, all of America who wants to know - you could clear all up by releasing - we sent you a letter two days ago - just release the application.

"The depths of this anti-Trump bias on the Mueller team just goes on and on", said Rep. Chabot. It was a document paid for by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Hillary Clinton campaign to be used as opposition research against Trump in 2016.

Strzok had been selected in July 2016 to oversee the Russian Federation probe and was also one of the top investigators of the probe into Hillary Clinton's emails and use of a private server.

"There is no shortage of opinions out there, but what I can tell you is that the Federal Bureau of Investigation that I see is tens of thousands of agents and analysts and staff working their tails off to keep Americans safe", Mr Wray said of the agency he has led for just four months.

Cubs finalist in the Giancarlo Stanton sweepstakes
Giancarlo Stanton's rejection of both the Giants and Cardinals has put the Yankees in play for the reigning NL MVP. A lineup that includes Judge, Stanton and Gary Sanchez would be the most formidable in all of baseball.

"I would also say the handling, including the handling of the statement that Director Comey issued, is exactly what the inspector general is investigating".

In Thursday's hearing, Democrats sought to push the focus back on Trump's comments and actions, and the actions of members of his campaign past year.

Wray refused to answer, saying, "I'm not prepared to discuss anything about a FISA process in this setting".

"The FBI I see", Wray added, "is tens of thousands of courageous men and women who are working as hard as they can to keep people that they will never know safe from harm".

Yates had replaced James Comey, who was sacked by President Donald Trump.

"Tell us what was in it. Tell us if I'm wrong".

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., said it would be "unacceptable for FBI employees to permit their own political predilections to contaminate any investigation", adding that "even the appearance of impropriety will devastate the FBI's reputation".
