UP civic polls: EVMs were rigged, say SP, BSP

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 14 our 16 mayoral seats in Uttar Pradesh civic polls, which were being considered as a referendum of CM Yogi Adityanath government's performance in the past seven months. Yogi Adityanath delivered, making it a three on three for the BJP after its sweep of the 2014 general elections and this year's assembly elections.

A BJP leader in UP said the Congress' drubbing in the Gandhi stronghold of Amethi, a week before Rahul Gandhi is expected to become Congress chief, will definitely be used by his party in its campaign for the Gujarat Assembly elections.

"I attribute this victory to PM Narendra Modi's vision and BJP chief Amit Shah's electoral strategies and my party colleagues", the chief minister said here at a press conference. BJP is leading in seats, including Lucknow, Allahabad, Aligarh, Varanasi, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur, Faizabad and Moradabad municipal corporations, while the BSP was ahead in Jhansi and Agra municipal corporations. BJP won only 664 seats with a win percentage of 12.22 per cent.

Without taking Gandhi's name, he said, "It will be better for those criticising the Gujarat model of development that they learn from the defeat in Amethi civic polls and come on the ground to do some work, rather than loosing arrows in the air".

Among the 5,433 seats of nagar panchayats members, Independents have won 3,875 seats - 71.31 per cent of the total seats. While SP won 477 wards, BSP emerged victorious in 262 and Congress in 158. At Chail, Sarai Akil and Ajuha, independent candidate Shivmani Kesarwani, Congress's Rohit Aazad and Independent Anil Kumar bagged the top posts, respectively.

Calling it a huge mandate, Adityanath said that the results have shown that people have faith in the BJP. The Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi has faced massive drawback in Amethi parliamentary constituency of Congress.
