The Only Supermoon of 2017 Is Happening. Here's When to View It

Supermoons happen when a full moon is closest to earth in its orbit.

The full moon will begin at 10:36 a.m., Sunday, in CT.

Unusual astronomical phenomenon called the Supermoon, or perigee moon. The orbit of the moon around the Earth in form is not a ideal circle, and a few stretches. A full moon at perigee will look up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than a full moon at apogee.

The Moon will lose its brightness and take on an eerie, fainter-than-normal glow from the scant sunlight that makes its way through Earth's atmosphere.

It'll be full again on Sunday night, but you'll have to be more patient trying to get a good look at it.

It won't be quite as bright as the last supermoon on November 14, 2016, when the moon was closer to Earth than at any time in almost 69 years. But for not-so-close observers?

A supermoon occurs when there is a full moon at or near the point where the moon reaches perigee.

Fortunately, Tyson's word isn't gospel, whether we're talking about supermoons, dwarf planets or adjectives vs. nouns. Early forecasts predict evening showers so hopefully the skies will clear up enough to view the Supermoon. NASA officials said the second supermoon is coming on New Year's Day.

The bigger question is whether we'll be able to see the supermoon in Seattle. One is offered by the Virtual Telescope Project based in Rome. You also can catch the supermoon online at a free webcast from the Virtual Telescope Project starting at 16:00 UT on December 3.

The next supermoons are on January 2 and January 31, 2018. That'll be a super moon, even by Neil deGrasse Tyson's standards.

With a squad largely made up of players from Tunisian clubs Esperance and Etoile du Sahel, they also lack top-level pedigree. Southgate's under-stated approach will help, however, with the former England midfielder not prone to over-hyping his team.
