'Riverdale' Spin-Off 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' Coming to Netflix

'Riverdale' Spin-Off 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' Coming to Netflix

While most other popular Archie Comics characters are in Riverdale, Sabrina the Teenage Witch had been conspicuously missing from the CW's Archie-themed drama series, so it made sense when the network announced in September that it was developing a separate series about the young witch.

A witchy, Sabrina-themed Riverdale off-shoot that was originally developed for the CW has received a two-season order-but in a twist, the series will launch on Netflix rather than the broadcast channel Riverdale calls home. TV, with Aguirre-Sacasa, who penned the Riverdale pilot, and Lee Toland Krieger, who directed it, reprising their roles on the Sabrina pilot episode. Inspired by the comic book series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the show will reimagine the the story of Sabrina the Teenage Witch with a darker, more horror-oriented storyline.

An upfront commitment to make 20 episodes right out of the gate, however, would have been far less likely on The CW. So, when will the Sabrina reboot be on Netflix? According to Variety, Warner Bros. T.H.R. describes it as "a dark coming-of-age tale that traffics in horror, the occult and witchcraft" that "finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while fighting the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit". The Sabrina series could be the first of many Riverdale spin-offs, with Aguirre-Sacasa saying before the show debuted that he wanted to "expand" the world of the series.

The relationship between Riverdale and Netflix has already been mutually beneficial, with the viewership of the CW series quadrupling during season 2 after the first season of the teen noir became available to stream online. No word on whether we'll see the comic's villain, Madam Satan, in the show, but we wouldn't bet against it. Melissa Joan Hart previously played the character in the live-action, multi-cam series "Sabrina the Teenage Witch", which aired for seven seasons.

Sources say that the show is set to shoot back-to-back with the first series of episodes filming from February to June and the second from June to October.
