Trump poised to oust top diplomat Tillerson, says New York Times report

But he still would suffer from problems that have afflicted Tillerson, chief among them a boss who has shown little regard for diplomacy and no qualms about undermining his secretary of state with tweets, current and former USA officials said.

While President Trump has clashed with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, he appears fond of Pompeo, accepting daily briefings from the West Point grad.

"He's here. Rex is here", Trump said in the Oval Office when asked if he wants Tillerson to remain in his job.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders was torn apart by Morning Joe today after her "stunning" defense of President Trump's tweeting of unverified Islamophobic videos.

Observers across the political and foreign policy spectrum tend to view Tillerson as a failure at the State Department.

Mr. Trump on Thursday refused to answer questions about a White House plan to replace Tillerson after less than a year on the job. Both Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and retired Navy Vice Adm. Robert Harward are under consideration for that post.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly developed the transition plan and has discussed it with other officials, the Times reported.

Tillerson, the former chief executive of Exxon Mobil, has had a testy relationship with President Trump at times.

"Tillerson was one of the most blatant revolving door cases in the Trump administration and a clear sign that Trump's government was of, by, and for the fossil fuel industry", said Louaillier in a statement.

After meetings, officials say Pompeo and Trump stay behind to talk, and he seems to have the president's ear.

Vanity Fair, citing current and former State Department employees, confirmed the plan, as did CNN. On several occasions, the president publicly undercut his diplomatic initiatives. "When the president loses confidence in someone, they will no longer serve in the capacity that they're in", she said. Trump also deemed diplomacy with North Korea a waste of time, when Tillerson was pursuing just that. She did suggest that no move was imminent, saying the president and Tillerson planned to "work together to close out what we've seen to be an incredible year".

Tillerson has taken a more hawkish view than Trump on Russian Federation and tried to mediate a dispute after four Arab nations launched a boycott of Qatar.

Pompeo left the U.S. House seat representing Kansas' 4th District to head the Central Intelligence Agency in January.

Tillerson successfully convinced Mr. Trump to keep the the Iran nuclear deal.
