Graduate students stage protest of GOP tax plan changes to graduate benefits

Around 100 grad students at UC Davis protested a recently passed House bill on tax reform that could see grad students pay more taxes.

Beyond its direct effects on graduate students, the tax plan will likely have a negative effect on graduate student enrollment and their contributions to the university, said Karen DePauw, Virginia Tech vice president and dean for graduate education.

Washington, D.C., is now one of the most expensive cities in the country to live in, according to The Washington Post.

UB issues tuition waivers to 1,472 students, according to UB spokesperson John Della Contrada. The new bill implements this through taxing what is known as "tuition waivers".

For a single private university student with or without a child, the CDTB is approximately one eighth the total income of that student over the four years, or between $4,000 and $5,000 in additional taxes per year.

The Senate version would not tax tuition waivers as income.

Anybody working on an advanced degree, or who does research or teaching in exchange for not paying tuition, will now have that tuition deemed taxable income.

The tax plan could also profoundly affect SU employees, Syverud wrote, because many of them benefit from tuition waivers.

"[If the bill passed], tuition coverage from the university would count as tax cost", Landon Elkind, financial officer of UE Local 896/COGS, said. It's aimed at adult learners and primarily helps non-traditional, part-time and graduate students, particularly those with low or moderate incomes, the UI said.

Some of the nation's brightest STEM students protested at Caltech in an unusual display of campus political activism.

"It would essentially push graduate programs back to a 19th-century model of higher education in which only the rich could go on to higher education", Brown said. Asked how many would consider going overseas, more than half of the roughly 70 Caltech student protesters raised their hands. "But discretionary spending is where higher education gets much of its resources for student aid and research".

The president of the Graduate Teaching Fellow Federation said most of the students work 40 to 80 hours a week.

Such worries have meant sleepless nights for Mariel Bello, a USC doctoral student in clinical psychology who hopes her research will improve addiction treatment in low-income communities.

"Not every PhD student has a family that can financially support and even pay for their education".

As she started to do the math, tears welled up.

"I'm sitting on a mortgage with no house to show for it", Wallace said. Many students said the new tax bill would normalize student debt.

Graduate students and faculty gathered in a large circle on Cater Lawn chanting, "No grad tax", under gray skies.

Graduate students and the university leadership are working hard to ensure that and other provisions in the House bill don't go any further.

We're always working to make sure our voices are heard throughout the CU Boulder community because we firmly believe that graduate students are great contributors to the university's goal.

The Office of the Provost has previously issued a letter stating its support for graduate students and emphasizing USC's advocacy efforts as Congress debates tax reform. The campaign also takes aim at other provisions of the proposed changes, including the proposed repeal of the Affordable Care Act's individual coverage mandate. If passed, the Senate versions would be reconciled with the House bill for a final vote in both chambers. "But we're going to leave a voicemail to tell them to vote no on the tax bill".

Despite the Trump administration pounding on friends - Canada, Mexico and South Korea - and foe - China - alike by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, the trade deficit is getting bigger and jobs losses worse.

Until they hear word of the Senate's approval, grad students everywhere are holding their breath.

Similar actions were held at several other campuses Wednesday.
