Patriots place Martellus Bennett, Nate Ebner on injured reserve

New England Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett will be placed on injured reserve, according to Jim McBride of the Boston Globe. He'll now get a chance to have shoulder surgery, which was at the center of the unresolved conflict between player and team in Green Bay.

Bennett's injuries look to be too much to recover from this season, so he will go on IR.

The Packers waived Bennett with a failure to disclose an injury designation on November 8, setting off a firestorm of back-and-forth allegations from Bennett and the team. Dwayne Allen will be the main backup tight end to Rob Gronkowski over the rest of the season. A hamstring injury for Bennett was disclosed on the team's participation report after that game, and he attempted to play through that as well. After a odd exit from the Green Bay Packers over his shoulder, Bennett signed very quickly with the Patriots a few weeks ago.

Bennett signed with the Packers as an unrestricted free agent last offseason and started seven games. Rapoport reported the tight end suffered a torn rotator cuff that caused Green Bay to waive him before New England picked him up.

This year's event, though, falls just as the White House has directed Tillerson to slash his agency's budget. In a way to snub the first daughter, he's refusing to send any senior officials from the State Department.

Even though Bennett could have been a help for the Patriots, they are certainly capable of playing well without him as shown this season. After considering retirement during the season, he might have played his last game.

He was healthy enough to play upon joining the Patriots, catching six passes for 53 yards in two games.

In direct correlation to the move, New England has also chose to place safety Nate Ebner on season-ending IR after he suffered a knee injury against the Miami Dolphins.

Ebner was injured against Miami after successfully executing a 14-yeard fake punt to pick up a first down.
