Guarantee Safety of Kulbhushan Jadhav's Wife And Mother, India Asks Pakistan

Earlier this month, the Pakistan government had said it had allowed Jadhav's wife to meet him on "humanitarian grounds" even though his mother's request had been pending with them for over 10 months. It also approached the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in May, which stayed the execution of Kulbhushan.

The Ministry of External Affairs has accepted Pakistan's offer of allowing Kulbhushan Jadhav's wife to meet him, but has put forward three conditions, ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said. Although this request was pending, India still responded positively to the offer made by Pakistan to arrange meeting of Kulbhushan Jadhav with his wife.

India has sought a sovereign guarantee from Pakistan that Kulbhushan Jadhav's wife and mother would not be questioned and would be given full security when and if they go to meet the former navy officer who has been sentenced to death by a military court on charges of espionage. New Delhi had said Jadhav's mother too should be allowed to accompany her since this is what Jadhav's wife wants, with the MEA agreeing to the proposed visit of Jadhav's wife to Pakistan to meet him.

Raveesh Kumar further stated that the Indian government has further demanded that a diplomat from Indian High Commission in Pakistan shall be allowed to accompany them at all times, including during their meeting with Jadhav.

India had been trying to arrange a meeting between Jadhav and his family members since July and had also moved a visa application for his mother. New Delhi's repeated requests to grant consular access to him were turned down by Islamabad.

The ICJ had asked Pakistan not to execute Jadhav till its final decision on India's petition.

Kulbhushan Jadhav, a former Indian Navy officer was arrested in Pakistan on the espionage charges. We have sought a sovereign guarantee from the Government of Pakistan to ensure safety, security of both, the MEA official said. Jadhav was abducted by Pakistani in March 2016, authorities in Iran and brought across the border and then sent to jail.
