Lebanon's Hariri Returns to Lebanon to Tackle Political Crisis

Hariri was leading a coalition government with his political opponents in the militant group Hezbollah when he stunned Lebanon by announcing his resignation in a televised statement from Saudi Arabia on November 4.

Saad al-Hariri returned to Beirut on Tuesday for the first time since he resigned as Lebanon's prime minister in a broadcast from Saudi Arabia and plunged his country into political crisis.

Saudi Arabia, Hariri's long-time political patron, is Iran's arch-foe in the region.

"Saad Hariri arrived in Cairo on Tuesday evening from Paris to meet President Sisi, and he is scheduled to return to Lebanon on Wednesday", MENA state news agency said.

Al-Hariri flew to Cairo from Paris, where he held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron.

His father, late Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri, was assassinated in 2005 and an worldwide court is still investigating the tragedy.

"President Macron updated Prime Minister Netanyahu with the measures he is taking in the crisis in Lebanon", the PMO said in a statement.

Hariri expressed fear of assassination and criticized Iran and Hezbollah movement for attempts to destabilize the situation in the Middle East.

During the talks, El-Sisi stressed "the need for all parties in Lebanon to reach a consensus, elevate national interests and reject foreign interference in Lebanese internal affairs", according to statement by the presidency.

Earlier, Hariri met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo, saying after the meeting that he would announce his "political position" in Lebanon.
