Fort Drum Releases Information About Reported Sexual Assaults On Post

Data is sourced from the Department of Defense (DoD) Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office's (SAPRO) November 2017 report: Reports of Sexual Assault Received at Military Installations and Combat Areas of Interest.

Restricted Reports allow individuals making a report to confidentially seek support and medical services.

32 percent of all assaults that occurred within the military in 2016's fiscal year report, which represented an improvement 2014's estimated average of 15 percent or fewer, according to the report.

The latest figures show that the prevalence rate of sexual assault has been on the decline. The release today lists the number of reports alleging sexual assault that are being handled by Sexual Assault Response Coordinators at military installations worldwide.

Titled Reports of Sexual Assault Received at Military Installations and Combat Areas of Interest, the document tallies adult sexual assaults (not including domestic abuse) at Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force bases around the world, as well as in areas of conflict where USA service people are deployed.

The new numbers from the fiscal year 2016 show the number of sex assault reports has almost tripled at Fort Carson since 2013.

The overall numbers released Friday reflect previous reports by SAPRO.

In fiscal year 2016, there were a total of 199 reports at Fort Hood, making it the Army base with the largest number of reports.

At any point in time, a DoD victim may choose to change their filed restricted report to an unrestricted report. In the Marine Corps, there were 837 reports in 2015 to 825 in 2016.

Officials at Fort Carson directly attribute the change in reporting systems from fiscal year 2013 to 2014 to the increase in reports at the installation.

"Sexual assault is fratricide in our formations, plain and simple".

In 2016, the most recent data the department has on the prevalence rates of sexual assault showed a decrease from 6.1% of active-duty women in 2012 to 4.3% in 2016, and from 1.2% of active-duty men in 2012 to 0.6% in 2016, SAPRO said.

The allegations of sexual assault were recorded at the locations where they were reported, which is not necessarily where they occurred. The incident could have occurred "while on deployment, while away on leave, or even prior to entering the military", the Pentagon told ABC News.

In 2012, the military "reinvigorated" its approach to addressing sexual assault and encouraged better reporting, according to de Vera, the Navy spokesman.
