David Goffin upsets Roger Federer in semifinals of ATP Finals

David Goffin upsets Roger Federer in semifinals of ATP Finals

After comfortably winning the first set, the Swiss tennis maestro went down in the second before he held young pretender Zverev at bay to clinch a 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 6-1 win in a thrilling clash that lasted two hours and 11 minutes.

"So maybe the satisfaction is when I do win and I do show up at the best tournaments in the world, like here, I know it's not normal maybe to be here, so I appreciate it actually maybe even more so now at this age".

However, Goffin was not to be beaten again by the 19-time grand slam champion and roared back to life, winning the next two sets to claim a spot in the London final.

David Goffin got a chance to experience the ATP Finals action previous year when he stepped in after Gael Monfils was forced to withdraw, and 12 months later he came as a regular competitor of the elite ATP event, occupying the 8th place in the ATP rankings. I'm so happy to play the match I played, it was such a special moment. I wish I could have done that a little bit more today. The serve was there right to the end.

Unveiling his full array of shots in front of a purring crowd at London's O2 Arena, including a remarkable low backhand volley at the net, he was briefly held up by Goffin but sealed the set 6-2 with an ace. At 3-0 in the second set, Goffin was digging his heels into the game.

Jack Sock booked a place in the semifinals of the ATP Finals with a surprise 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win over German Alexander Zverev.

Goffin needed just the one break in both the second and third sets and displayed a previously unseen grit to deny Federer his lone break point opportunities in either set.

A double fault from Goffin at game point at 2-1 looked to have cost Goffin, but he turned it back around to lead 3-1.

Nearly nothing could separate the rivals in serving department, although Roger created 11 break points against 3 for David (they both scored 2 breaks), and Goffin won just 4 points more than Federer.

"It's been an wonderful year for me", said a disappointed Federer.

"It was a pity to play against Dominic, he is such a good friend and a nice guy, it's never easy to play against a friend". "I'm very calm. But there's a deeper understanding of what I'm going through".
