And on trade, the president said confidently that USA trading partners "will be treating us much differently than before".

But most of all, Trump will have to tangle with the country's controversial president, Rodrigo Duterte, who has a reputation for filthy language, has faced charges of crimes for his drug war, and has claimed several times to have killed people himself. It was just because we looked at each other.

In particular, this was due to the Trump administration's explicit and conscious decision to prioritise strategic cooperation with Asian allies over promotion of human rights and democracy values. "He went on to say that a 'relationship based on respect is much more important than anything else".

He is the last world leader to arrive for the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) Summit. Duterte's scorched-earth campaign has reportedly claimed thousands of lives since 2016, drawing condemnation from human rights groups, worldwide media and Western capitals.

Trump raved about his accomplishments on his five-nation journey, including on trade and North Korea, but said he would wait until his return to Washington on Wednesday to elaborate with a "major statement".

Since he became president, thousands have died in a nationwide anti-drugs campaign that human rights defenders say is being carried out in a culture of legal impunity. Ahead of his meeting with the U.S. president, he promised that his country will "remain to be the best of friends with America".

"There's a proposal to build a maintenance center for Russian ships in the Philippines", Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said.

Duterte has good reason to expect that Trump will not make his bloody rule an issue during the visit. Over the a year ago and a half, the violence has snowballed, with an enormous death toll.

The US carriers will also participate in separate exercises with three Japanese destroyers on Sunday, according to Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force.

Duterte also said that ASEAN member states have come to an agreement on the ASEAN consensus on the protection and promotion of rights of migrant workers, which will be signed by the leaders on Tuesday.

Perhaps Trump was referring erroneously to Obama's aborted meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte?

But after global pressure - including an economic threat by the European Union to strip the Philippines of trading privileges worth billions - and declining support at home, Duterte scaled back the policy in October.

Eyes will be on whether Trump does the fist pump, having told Duterte in April he was doing a "great job" in his drug war.

As the death toll from his drug war nears 1,000, Duterte vows no let up. The terrorists seized government offices, a university and other buildings, took hostages and fought back security forces.

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who was accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, attended the opening ceremony along with the other ASEAN Leaders, among them Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

With the danger still imminent, Duterte's government wants more weapons - announcing an interest in purchasing Russian arms Friday.
