The stunning escape occurred Monday at a jointly controlled area that is the only point where soldiers from the two sides face each other in the Demilitarized Zone.

The soldier crossed to South Korea from the North Korean side of the heavily guarded Joint Security Area (JSA) to Freedom House in the South, according to the JCS.

DiMaggio has held secret backchannel talks with North Korean officials four times over the past year, The Daily Telegraph reports, and has been a negotiator between the U.S. and North Korea for more than 20 years.

But there was no direct exchange of gunfire between South and North Korean guards in the process.

The defection came at a time of heightened tension over North Korea's nuclear weapons programme, and could escalate animosities between the rival countries.

Over the decades since the peninsula was divided, dozens of North Korean soldiers have fled to the South through the DMZ, which extends for two kilometers either side of the actual borderline. He was unconscious and in critical condition on Tuesday, the surgeon in charge of the soldier's treatment, Lee Cook-jong, told reporters. The next 10 days will be crucial for his recovery, Lee was quoted as saying by the Yonhap News Agency.

South Korea's military has strengthened vigilance in the wake of the incident and remains prepared for any situation, the JCS said. The last time a North Korean soldier defected through there was in 2007 and, before that, in 1998.

Among issues the North Koreans have raised with her in recent months, DiMaggio said, were everything from Trump's tweet urging Tillerson to give up on diplomacy with North Korea ("Is this a good cop/bad cop that he's doing with Tillerson?") to Trump's decision this fall to decertify Iran's compliance with the nuclear deal forged by his predecessor, Barack Obama.

A doctor treating the soldier - who was airlifted to a hospital for emergency surgery - said he had been shot half-a-dozen times and sustained a serious stomach injury. That prompted Washington to send nuclear-capable B-52 bombers to intimidate the North before the adversaries pulled back from the brink of conflict.
