Gird Your Loins: Twitter Is Giving Everyone 280 Characters

In a blog post, Aliza Rosen, a Twitter project manager wrote, "We are making this change after listening and observing a problem our global community was having (it wasn't easy enough to Tweet!), studying data to understand how we could improve, trying it out, and listening to your feedback".

Historically, 9% of Tweets in English hit the character limit.

The move modifies a fundamental aspect of Twitter.

But even the most ardent 280-character-tweet defenders will likely agree that the ability to send out a 35,000-character tweet might be pushing the envelope just a bit.

In previous years, reports surfaced that Twitter was exploring increasing the character limit for tweets - reports Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey quashed by calling the 140-character limit "a handsome constraint".

After things calmed down, only five per cent of the tweets sent by people with access to the feature during the recent test had more than 140 characters.

"And in one stroke, Twitter doubles the complexity of our nation's foreign policy", joked late night host Stephen Colbert after Twitter unveiled testing for 280 characters.

The USA TODAY Trump Voter Panel, a focus group of 25 Trump voters from around the country, agreed the president's tweeting is a big reason for his troubles in the first months of his administration. However she thinks giving users more space to express themselves within a tweet is good move on Twitter's part. "But that didn't happen".

The changes should be available to all of the service's users effective immediately, but a company spokesperson cautioned that it could take up to two hours to take effect in all apps around the globe.

NO! The beauty of @Twitter is fitting sense (and nonsense) into that character space.

Ultimately, Twitter's decision could lead to users growing more engaged with the service.

But those who did use the longer tweets, got more followers, more engagement and spent more time on the site, it added.

However, Twitter users - or, at least, a lot of them - did not sound off with the same level of enthusiasm when the news broke.

The site now has 330 million active users.
