The trade came down during the Avalanche's game against the New York Islanders.

"I kind of knew before they told me", Duchene said, per Sportsnet.

"I'm beyond excited, three hours from home, back in my home province with a team that I've been keeping my eye on for a long time", said Duchene, a native of Haliburton, Ontario.

Duchene, 26, is a speedy former 30-goal scorer coming off a down year (18 goals, 41 points). This season, he has 10 points in 13 games. Captain John Tavares also has been red-hot, recording multiple points in five of his last six contests (14 overall in that span) after notching a goal and an assist against the Capitals. Multiple reports indicated the Senators are trading center Kyle Turris to the Predators.

The Avalanche receive defenseman Samuel Girard, forward Vladislav Kamenev, and a second-round pick from Nashville, and forward Shane Bowers, goaltender Andrew Hammond, a first-round pick, and a third-round pick from Ottawa. Duchene was yanked from the game at the end of the first period, immediately after the trade was finalized.

Matt Duchene has been traded. Colorado entered Sunday 8-5-0 after finishing with just 48 points last season, the fewest by a non-expansion team since 1998-99.

Matt Duchene makes his long-awaited exit from the Colorado Avalanche organization. "We're building and want to keep building with youth and we feel like we accomplished that". Hell play his first two games with the Senators against the Avalanche next weekend in Stockholm.

"Being pulled in a game, then to be playing my first two games against my old team, is going to be pretty unusual", Duchene said. Girard, 19, was a 2016 second round pick of the Predators and made his National Hockey League debut this season. There is a solid chance the puck-mover will slot right onto the Avalanche's blue line. Kamenev, 21, was a 2014 second-round pick by the Predators and was playing for Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL and will likely head to San Antonio. Turris has shown he can be a strong two-way player, as he's already recorded nine points in 11 games to start the year after posting 55 points in 78 games during the 2016-17 campaign - plus, he's shown supreme defensive vision on the backcheck.

Bowers, 18, was Ottawa's first selection (first round, 28th overall) in the 2017 NHL Draft. During the 2014-15 season, Hammond helped launch Ottawa into the playoffs by posting a 20-1-2 regular-season record, all of which took place between February 16 and the regular-season finale on April 11.
