Will David Ross become next Cubs bench coach?

A search obviously starred immediately, and Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports has reported Chicago Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez is the choice to be the Nationals next manager.

Martinez joins new Mets manager Mickey Callaway as new skippers in the NL East. Martinez has been Joe Maddon's bench coach since 2008 with the Rays and the Cubs and has interviewed for multiple manager jobs the past few years.

Baker, who had been out of work for two seasons, wound up accepting a below-market, two-year, $4 million deal, creating a dilemma two weeks ago when the team suffered its second straight Game 5 loss in the National League Division Series with a manager whose contract was expiring. The last rookie manager to lead a team to a World Series title was Bob Brenly with the Diamondbacks in 2001.

The two sides are finalizing the details of what will be a three-year deal with an option for a fourth, a person familiar with the situation told the Washington Post. Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo was the scouting director for Arizona at the time.

A second service break in the eighth game allowed Wozniacki to serve for the set only for Williams to break back right away. Until yesterday, Caroline Wozniacki had won only one set in seven agonising losses to Venus Williams .

Martinez played 16 season as an outfielder in the majors, for the Cubs, Expos, Reds, Giants, White Sox, Rays, Blue Jays, and Braves. The Cubs have hired Jim Hickey, who worked with Maddon in Tampa, as their new pitching coach, while hitting coach Chili Davis and third-base coach Brian Butterfield came over from the Boston Red Sox.

In giving the Martinez, 53, a three-year contract, Nationals ownership broke with longstanding (and controversial) form.

The Nationals then offered the job to Dusty Baker. As a first-time manager, Martinez is also about as opposite of Baker as it gets. This one likely won't wait that long, though a press conference might.
