And it has to do it in time for the holidays.

Meanwhile, with the iPhone X set to hit the market late next week, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are seeing a narrowing window of opportunity for early sales. One of these projects 30 million infrared beams on to a person's face. The original prototype, he said, was about the size of a shoe box, and now, the company is trying to squeeze that same technology into a space on the iPhone X that's no larger than a few toothpicks.

Bloomberg reports that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) allowed suppliers to reduce Face ID accuracy to speed up iPhone X production. Newman Dignan & Sheerar Inc. now owns 24,371 shares of the iPhone maker's stock worth $3,501,000 after buying an additional 108 shares during the last quarter. For comparison, Apple sold 78 million phones during the same period previous year, although that included all models.

But it could be a while before iPhone X customers get their hands on the flagship device. However, shortages of the TrueDepth camera which powers the iPhone X's Face ID technology along with features like Animoji animated emojis compounded the delays.

The iPhone X relies on Face ID for unlocking tasks previously managed by Touch ID, which the newer device lacks.

Even if Apple did reduce the accuracy spec for Face ID, that might not be enough to keep production on track.

The service, called Amazon Key , will be available in 37 USA cities beginning November 8 to customers of the Amazon Prime service. Amazon Key works with the organization's new Cloud Cam surveillance camera, a smart entryway lock and the new Key application.

The crux of the problem has been with the dot projector, according to Bloomberg. It has to work exactly as described, or people will be up in arms (on top of it being $$$).

The most hard component to make is the dot projector that flashes 30,000 dots onto a face to precisely map out details. One supplier failed to meet Apple's specifications in time, and others slowed down production to ensure precision.

Pelayo is predicting 13 percent iPhone unit growth in calendar year 2018, to 247.5 million, with average selling prices also rising 12 percent year over year as Apple raises the price on higher-end and "Plus" models.

If Face ID is less reliable or on par with the competition, "that would mean a win for competitors and a loss for Apple", Schneemann suggested.

"The iPhone X is now being produced at a rate of 10 million units per month, but with the sales scheduled to begin on November 3, Apple is likely to only provide 20 million units this year", it said.

Apple has loaded the iPhone X with a number of firsts, including an OLED screen. Suppliers LG Innotek and Sharp reportedly have struggled to combine the laser and lens.
