John Kelly backtracks after saying that he runs the country

"This is, in my view, the most important job I ever had".

He also said that running the USA is "really, really hard work", before quickly asserting that he does not run the country.

"Again, I was not sent in - or I was not brought to this job - to control anything but the flow of information to our president so that he can make the best decisions".

Kelly elected to explain his after a week of reports on turmoil within the White House, fueled by comments from Republican Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Bob Corker comparing the White House to "adult day care" and casting Kelly as one of a trio of senior figures averting 'chaos'. His appearance followed recent reports that he's unhappy in his job and has considered leaving.

Trump's incessant early-morning tweeting is not, Kelly insisted, a sign he has failed to control the president, as members of the press also have reported. "I don't run it, but I'm working for someone who is dedicated to serving the country in a way that he's talked about for a number of years".

A respected military leader, Kelly was named Trump's chief of staff in July, replacing Reince Priebus, to help restore discipline to a West Wing rife with leaks and dissension.

Silberstein has been fired and insists Social Democratic Chancellor Christian Kern knew nothing about the postings. The last time the Freedom Party was in government was 17 years ago.

General Kelly hinted at the possibility of an attack by the U.S. on the regime. "I was not sent in to or brought in to control him. you should not measure my effectiveness as chief of staff by what you think I should be doing".

He's not quitting or getting fired (at least not today). On Thursday, he hinted that he would like to be seen and heard from more, while defending Trump as "a decisive guy" and "a thoughtful man". "But simply, the fact is, I can guarantee to you that he is now presented with options, well thought-out options".

GENERAL KELLY: One of his frustrations is you.

I don't mean any criticism to Mr. Trump's predecessors, but there is an bad lot of things that were, in my view, kicked down the road that have come home to roost, pretty much right now, that have to be dealt with.

Kelly was pushed further by the press on the issue of him leaving, to which Kelly turned things back onto the media.

Kelly concluded by calling on Raghubir Goyal, a reporter for an Indian publication who is known for his convoluted questions. -Indian relations, he left to a chorus of shouting from reporters who'd been ignored during the briefing. Trump was incensed by a report that he wanted a tenfold increase in the USA nuclear arsenal.
