Many #WomenBoycottTwitter to support Rose McGowan, others criticize campaign for 'silencing' women

McGowan's suspension caused an enormous backlash on social media, with many criticizing Twitter for a move that would silence an alleged victim of sexual harassment on its service.

Canadian-born actor Anna Paquin welcomed any men who wish to show their support under the trending hash tag #WomenBoycottTwitter. McGowan, who accused Weinstein of raping her, had her Twitter account suspended Thursday.

So, in response to #WomenBoycottTwitter, two hashtags have started making the rounds Friday, both aimed at lifting the voices of women, of color or not, that have been silenced for too long: #AmplifyWomen and #WOCAffirmation.

McGowan instagrammed the notification she received from the company, adding: "TWITTER HAS SUSPENDED ME".

Rose McGowan has become one of the most powerful voices speaking out against Harvey Weinstein. The Tweet was removed and her account has been unlocked. "We will be clearer about these policies and decisions in the future", the tweeted statement read. "We stand with the fearless women and men who use Twitter to share their stories, and will work hard every day to improve our processes to protect those voices", Twitter tweeted.

Twitter didn't respond to a request for comment.

McGowan was identified in a New York Times article last week as receiving a financial settlement from Weinstein over an encounter with the producer at the Sundance Film Festival in 1997.

Actress Alyssa Milano, who starred alongside Rose McGowan in the TV series Charmed, said that she would be refraining from tweeting for the first time in a decade. "I hope to see some meaningful changes come out of it, including better tools for dealing with dogpile-style harassment".
