Turkey hopes for quick normalization of soured bilateral ties with US

Relations between Serbia and Turkey have improved in recent years after decades of mistrust between the two nations. Bass has already received a new appointment in Afghanistan, but before his departure he will have farewell meetings with representatives of the Turkish state as ministers and the Speaker of Parliament.

"It has huge importance and potential in the context of the continuation of the political dialogue at the highest level between our two countries as well as strengthening political, economic, cultural and overall dialogue and ties", Danilo Vucetic said of the visit, set to start yesterday.

"The Turkish business is more and more interested in Serbia".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held talks with Serbia's president on Tuesday as Ankara stepped up efforts to increase its clout in the Balkans.

"At a time when global and regional tensions are escalating, we are not going to leave common sense behind", he added.

The spat between the two countries was ignited by the recent arrest of Metin Topuz, a US consulate employee in Istanbul, over suspected links to USA -based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is accused by Ankara of being behind a failed coup attempt in July 2016.

Ties have also frayed in recent months over the refusal of the USA to extradite Gulen, and its support for Kurdish militias in Syria.

"Sandzak is one of the bridges that connect us", Erdogan said in a speech translated from Turkish into Serbian and aired on Serbian state TV.
