Turkey's Erdogan says Syria rebels in new Idlib operation

Turkey's Erdogan says Syria rebels in new Idlib operation

"We are now in the process of taking further steps towards securing Idlib after expanding the Euphrates Shield Operation".

During his speech, Erdoğan said that the operation in Idlib is the follow-up of the Euphrates Shield Operation in northern Syria, which was launched on August 24, 2016, in a bid to clear Turkey's border from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and stop the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) from merging its Kobane and Afrin cantons.

Rebels backed by Turkey are carrying out a new operation in Syria's north-western Idlib province, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says.

The push on Saturday comes as Turkey along with Russian Federation and Iran prepare to set up a so-called "de-escalation" zone in Idlib province, in line with deals in talks in Kazakhstan's capital, Astana, aimed at ending the Syrian civil war.

The US maintains that the group is still linked to al Qaeda, however.

"We will never allow a terror corridor along our Syria border", the Turkish president said.

Russia, an ally of Assad, is backing the operation from the air, he said.

Turkey earlier this year ended its months-long Euphrates Shield operation against jihadists and Kurdish forces in Aleppo province that involved both the Turkish army and Syrian rebels.

The move, which had been rumored for weeks, comes as Turkey along with Russian Federation prepares to set up a so-called "de-escalation" zone in Idlib in line with accords in peace talks in Astana aimed at ending the Syrian civil war, Hurriyet reported.

Turkey has been moving military equipment to its border with Syria since June 21.

"Russia is supporting the operation from the air, and our armed forces from inside Turkey's borders", he added.

It said in the statement that Idlib would "not be a picnic" for them and added "the lions of jihad and martyrdom are waiting to pounce".

The Turkish president has announced plans to start a new military operation in Syria in a move which has been rumored for weeks. "We expect that the large-scale operation that has been prepared will be launched perhaps within the next 24 hours", the rebel said.

Asked whether the Idlib operation would be similar to Euphrates Shield, Erdogan replied: "When you enter the boxing ring you don't count your punches".

In July Tahrir al-Sham seized land around the Bab al-Hawa border crossing between Syria and Turkey, bringing much of the frontier area inside Syrian under its control.

UPFRONT: Has the Syrian opposition lost the war?

Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said the strikes were probably carried out by the Syrian air force, which has been carrying out an intensifying bombing campaign against opposition targets in Idlib province alongside aircraft from ally Russian Federation.
