Las Vegas gunman booked hotel overlooking Lollapalooza 2 months before massacre

The attacked killed at least 58 people and injured nearly 500 people, making it the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

On Wednesday police said that Paddock had previously rented rooms with sights on the "Life is Beautiful Festival", in Las Vegas.

The Associated Press reports that authorities have been tracking Paddock's movements prior to the Sunday shooting. The Chicago Tribune reports that local police are now investigating.

As first reported by TMZ, Paddock booked two rooms at the Blackstone Hotel, one for August 1 and one for August 3, through Expedia, then called to ask that his rooms have views.

The Blackstone, a 21-story hotel, has windows overlooking Grant Park, including the stages where bands performed at Lollapalooza.

But it has now emerged the retired accountant may have considered sites in Chicago and Boston. It was unclear if Paddock was in Chicago during the festival, according to the law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

A picture of a computer screen at the Blackstone Hotel purports to show the check-in information and was published by TMZ, which first reported the hotel booking.

They say Stephen Paddock rented rooms in high-rises overlooking the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago in August and over the Life is handsome festival near the Vegas Strip in September.

He offered no other details about what led Paddock there.

More than 400,000 people came out for August's annual Lollapalooza festival in Chicago's historic Grant Park, which featured performances by The Killers, Chance the Rapper, Lorde, Arcade Fire, Justice and Liam Gallagher. The various media reports stated that Paddock had researched a possible attack in Boston with Fenway Park as a potential target.

An FBI official in Las Vegas, meanwhile, said no one has been taken into custody. The guns traced back to dealers in Nevada, Utah and Texas.

New details in the case have emerged over the last four days indicating Paddock checked into his two-room suite at Mandalay Bay on September 28.

"Often, we're finding out when it's too late", a source told CBS News.

Yet it seems today that the shooter had planned another shooting, at the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, this time.

Investigators trying to establish the motive for the attack have had little more to chase than hints and shadows.

What motivated Paddock to kill dozens of strangers and whether he had help remains a mystery.

Danley told FBI agents Wednesday she had not noticed any changes in his mental state or indications he could become violent, the federal official said.

"There's all kinds of things that surprise us in each one of these events".

"All of this craziness could have happened to me and a lot of people I know that also attended Lollapalooza", said Columbia College student Jake Eisendrath.

Investigators are looking at his gambling habits and checking records for any disputes he might have had with casinos or fellow patrons.

Investigators say he also had a plan to survive the shooting and try to escape, though would not say how.

"While there, he wired me money which he said was for me to buy a house for me and my family", she said.
