How Russell Westbrook's Contract Affects Paul George, Carmelo Anthony, OKC Thunder

Even if Paul George and Carmelo Anthony choose to bolt after this season, they should feel safe knowing that they'll have a superstar in the long term.

Russell Westbrook will be staying in Oklahoma City for the foreseeable future.

Earlier this month he inked another epic deal, a 10-year contract extension with Jordan Brand, which is reportedly the most lucrative endorsement deal ever by any Jordan athlete.

Westbrook is now under contract with the team for six years, and for a total of $233 million, which makes it the largest contract in National Basketball Association history.

While the threat of Westbrook following Durant out the door loomed for Oklahoma City, the team was in a stronger negotiating position this time around. After losing Kevin Durant to free agency past year with nothing in exchange, it is obvious that Sam Presti and company don't want to make a similar mistake with Westbrook. Westbrook was one of the players expected to be hotly pursued in free agency this summer by big market squads like the Los Angeles Lakers.

"Russell Westbrook's commitment to the Thunder organization since its inception in 2008 has helped propel us to great heights and stare down great challenges over our first decade", Thunder General Manager Sam Presti said in a statement.

The news on Friday afternoon was a welcome surprise for Oklahoma City Thunder fans. The deal starts with the 2018-19 season and puts him under contract through 2022-23. From day one the support that Mr. Bennett, Sam (Presti), Troy (Weaver) and the entire organization have given me and my family has been incredible, and we are so grateful. Because of Westbrook's contract extension, there's at least a better chance that George and Anthony will choose do to do the same.

By foregoing free agency, Westbrook is letting his All-Star teammates know that he's committed to building a perennial victor in Oklahoma City.
