Bali volcano: Indonesia Fears Imminent Mt Agung Eruption

"Denpasar City and most of the touristic destinations in Bali are safe from the eruption or unsafe impact of the eruption", said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, head of Information and data of Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency.

Mount Agung is one of many active volcanoes in the ring of fire, a string of volcanoes and seismic activity that runs through the Indonesian archipelago and the edges of the Pacific Ocean.

Then, lava spewed 7.5 km (4.7 miles) while ash was hurled as high as 20 kilometres (12 miles) and blew as far as the Indonesian capital Jakarta some 1,000km (620 miles) away, to the west. The volcano is now on the highest alert level and an exclusion zone of nine kilometers as been set from the crater.

Virgin Australia and Jetstar, both of which fly to Bali from Australia, said they would carry extra fuel in case they needed to reverse course quickly.

It's been more than 50 years since Agung's last eruption, which continued for nearly a year.

Around 62,000 people lived in the danger zone prior to the evacuations, according to the disaster mitigation agency.

BPNB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said hundreds of thousands of face masks will be distributed in Bali as part of government humanitarian assistance that includes thousands of mattresses and blankets.

Local authorities reassured tourists that it was not unsafe to visit the island, and Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport continued to operate normally.

Indonesia is made of thousands of islands and is prone to earthquakes and volcanoes, what geologists call seismic upheaval. "My feeling is the mountain will erupt".

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is set to visit on Tuesday afternoon a number of residents taking shelter in Klungkung, a Bali regency that is hosting the second largest number of evacuees who fled their homes in anticipation of Mount Agung's possible eruption.

More than 15000 people of Bali around the foot of Mount Agung, a volcano were were evacuated to GOR Swacepura refuge and 125 other places on September 23, 2017. That event was preceded by an increased frequency in earthquakes.

"The chance that an eruption will happen is quite big".
