Myanmar police fire warning shots in Rakhine as mob attacks aid boat

Bangladesh border guards said the flow of refugees leaving Myanmar had eased off over the past day, apparently because bad weather had discouraged people from taking to boats to reach Bangladesh.

The United Nations has said the military response to the insurgent attacks is ethnic cleansing aimed at pushing the Rohingya Muslim community out of Buddhist-majority Myanmar.

United Nations aid agencies said this week they are ramping up operations in southeast Bangladesh where more than 420,000 Rohingya Muslims have sought refuge from violence in neighbouring Myanmar.

Members of the 1.1 million group, who identify themselves by the term Rohingya, are seen by many Myanmar Buddhists as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

"President Trump and I also call on the Security Council of the United Nations to take strong and swift action to bring this crisis to an end and bring hope and help to the Rohingya people in their hour of need", Pence said. The retired Chief Justice of India said the human rights body was helping the Rohingya on "humanitarian grounds" as they faced persecution in Myanmar.

"Unless a sustainable solution is found there is a possibility that the entire Rohingya community from Myanmar may flee to Bangladesh to escape this ongoing grave violation of human rights", Haque said, seeking help of the worldwide community to come forward to resolve the crisis facing Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state of Myanmar.

"National races" refers to officially recognised indigenous ethnic groups.

The new money for food, medical care, water, sanitation and shelter comes as the US joins a growing chorus of global condemnation over the minority group's plight.

The exodus has also emerged as a major blemish on the record of Myanmar's civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, who maintained close ties to the Obama administration. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had shared Delhi's concerns over the situation in Rakhine during a meeting with Myanmar Suu Kyi when he visited Nay Pyi Taw earlier this month as the two sides made a decision to ramp up counter-terror partnership as well as development projects in the restive state.

The new funding brings USA humanitarian assistance to internally displaced persons in Burma and refugees from Burma in the region to almost $95 million in FY 2017, and it reflects the US commitment to help address the unprecedented magnitude of suffering and urgent humanitarian needs of the Rohingya people.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday said attacks on Myanmar's Rohingya minority amounted to "genocide".

Suu Kyi rejected a suggestion she was soft on the military, telling Radio Free Asia her objective was national reconciliation.

"Refugees from this country will be accepted without any problem", she said.
