Maria Becomes a Hurricane

Maria Becomes a Hurricane

A "burst of convection" occurred in Maria's center yesterday afternoon, with an open eyewall forming in the storm's core, National Hurricane Center forecasters said. The storm, which had maximum sustained winds of almost 80 mph, was 550 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

Jose has been churning in the Atlantic for almost a week and has yet to make landfall, but the storm is expected to bring unsafe surf and heavy rain to Atlantic coastal areas.

For the SC coast, no direct impact is expected with Jose, but unsafe surf and rip currents will be possible over the next few days.

CT may not be in the cone of uncertainty according to the latest track from the National Hurricane Center, but it still bears watching as CT will still feel some of the effects, even as it weakens to a tropical storm.

The storm was on a path that would take it near numerous islands already wrecked by Hurricane Irma and then on toward Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

Maximum sustained winds are near 165 miles per hour with higher gusts. A devastating blow to Puerto Rico is possible by Wednesday as Maria approaches the island.

A northwestward movement is expected to continue as it becomes Hurricane Maria early next week.

Late Sunday, the Category 1 hurricane was about 305 miles (490 kilometers) southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and moving north at 9 mph.

Tropical Storm Watches have been issued for St. Lucia, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Dominica as the strong tropical wave to the east of the island chain was upgraded to Potential Tropical Cyclone Fifteen, said the US National Hurricane Center (NHC). A tropical storm watch means tropical storm conditions are possible in the warned area - generally within 48 hours. There also various tropical storm watches.

By Wednesday morning, Jose is forecast to stop moving north and begin re-curving east into the Atlantic.

Jose had maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour.

At 11 p.m., the center of Tropical Storm Lee was located near latitude 12.8 North, longitude 34.9 West, about 760 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.
