Pakistan Ousted PM Nawaz Sharif's Wife Wins Parliamentary Seat

PML-N central leader Maryam Nawaz proved her mettle for her very first daunting political task of campaigning for NA-120 by-poll as she presented the "victory gift" to her parents.

Sharif's daughter Maryam has spearheaded the PML-N campaign for her mother - who was the ruling party's candidate despite receiving cancer treatment in London with Sharif at her side.

The Supreme Court disqualified Nawaz Sharif from office over a ruling he was dishonest in a corruption inquiry.

Sharif's supporters celebrated in the streets Sunday night, dancing to drums and songs blaring from loudspeakers and shouting slogans while the Lahore sky was lit by fireworks.

Pakistan's election commission on Thursday also issued a warrant for the arrest of Imran Khan, a leading opposition figure, for making negative remarks about the organization.

Sharif was disqualified by Pakistan's top court for failure to declare a monthly salary, equivalent to around $2,700, from a company owned by his son.

Some PML-N circles believe the political environment is not conducive for Sharif's return and hence, he has been advised to stay in London for some time.

Long lines of voters were seen at numerous NA-120 electoral constituency's 220 polling stations in the eastern city, capital of Punjab province, on Sunday. The Sharif family and Dar will now face corruption cases filed by the National Accountability Bureau in the accountability court.

Ms Maryam said her father's dismissal is a conspiracy, noting that his success in reinvigorating the economy and overall popularity had "sent alarm bells ringing" for those who do not want Pakistan to have a strong leader.

The petitions were filed by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) nominee for NA-120 Faisal Mir and Pakistan Awami Tehreek's (PAT) Advocate Ishtiaq Ahmad Chaudhry. Sheikh, the MML candidate, was also named as by the USA as a "specially designated global terrorist" in 2012, for his alleged role in leading fundraising and operations for LeT.
