Indiana's Unemployment Rises in August

The Maine Department of Labor says the unemployment rate in the state rose slightly from July to August, but remained below last year's mark.

Year-over-year, there was an overall gain 265,100 jobs, a 1.6 percent increase. North Dakota and Colorado reported the nation's lowest unemployment rates, at 2.3 percent and 2.4 percent, respectively. US employers added 156,000 jobs overall last month, and the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.4 percent, still near a 16-year low.

Vermont's unemployment rate is down in August, compared to July. "Nevertheless, due to a decline in the state's labor force, the unemployment rate fell to 4.8 percent".

An additional 1,802 new entrants joined the labor force in August, and employment increased by 2,979 for a total of 796,430, absorbing 1,177 unemployed workers.

The Department of Labor in its analysis of the job numbers says it is possible the upward trend in unemployment is just "statistical noise".

Economist Emilie Doerksen said nonfarm employment grew by 800 jobs last month and the service-providing sector added almost 2,000 jobs.

Tuesday's report was based on survey data collected earlier this year for 2016, the final full year of the Obama administration. That contrasts with white households at 2.0 percent ($65,041) and a 4.3 percent jump for Hispanic households ($47,675).

Since August 2016, Kansas lost 9,000 seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs and 6,300 private sector jobs.

The number of jobs in the area also hit an all-time high of 191,751, which was up more than 5,100 from a year ago.

The Lincoln area also hit an all-time high for the number of people employed during the month with 181,174, up almost 4,700 from August 2016, whole the number of people counted as unemployed fell by more than 700 compared with a year ago.

Year over year, farms added 700 jobs while nonfarm industries added 1,300 jobs.

Jobs in leisure and hospitality rose by 4,600, largely in food services.
