There were 379 arrests for terrorism-related offences in Britain in the year ending June 2017, more than one a day and a 68% increase year on year.

A senior detective warned there is no such thing as a "typical terrorist" after official figures showed rises in numbers detained across ethnicities and age groups.

In 12 months leading to March 2016 terrorism related arrests were up by 18 per cent to 304, and was the high number in any financial year since data collection started in September 2001, after the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon.

Neil Basu, deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said: "While the terrorist threat has increased in recent months, so has our activity, reflected by this significant increase in arrests".

He told the Press Association: "We've seen people from all walks of life".

The UK has suffered a torrid year of terror attacks, with five killed in the Westminster Bridge attack, 22 dying in the Manchester Arena bombing and eight killed in the London Bridge atrocity. We are never complacent, we are looking at our systems and our processes.

The new figures show a 60% jump in arrests linked to worldwide terrorism, from 184 to 294.

By the end of June this year, 204 people in the United Kingdom were in custody for terrorism-related offences in the country.

Domestic terrorism refers to activity where there are no links to either Northern Ireland-related or global terrorism. A further 189 people were released without charge, and the remainder were either on bail, or police investigations and other actions were ongoing.
