Russia-Turkey S-400 supply deal worth more than 2 billion United States dollars

Russia-Turkey S-400 supply deal worth more than 2 billion United States dollars

As Turkey's accord for the S-400 defense mechanism is a deal with a non-NATO supplier, the possible purchase raised concerns in the West over compatibility with the alliance's equipment. "We are taking and will take all our measures on the security front", Erdoğan said during a meeting with mayors from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in Ankara.

"Now this country is manufacturing its own armed drones and that's led to dispute".

"They have gone insane because we made a deal for S-400s", Erdoğan said Wednesday in a speech to the ruling AKP mayors in Ankara, as cited by "Hurriyet".

In parallel to the S-400, the Turkish companies Aselsan and Roketsan signed a "Heads of Agreement" with French-Italian consortium Eurosam to fulfill the Turkish Undersecretariat of Defence Industries (SSM)'s requirement for a homegrown long-range SAM system. "What were we supposed to do, wait for you?" the Turkish head of state said during a speech in Ankara on Wednesday. We take care of ourselves in every security point.

"We have relayed our concerns to Turkish officials regarding the potential purchase of the S-400", Pentagon spokesman Johnny Michael told CNBC in a written statement on September 12.

Turkey has been weighing options for acquiring long-range SAMs for years. But NATO officials have voiced disquiet over the purchase of missiles incompatible with alliance systems. Defense observers speculated that Turkey played the China card to put pressure on its allies and get better terms for buying a NATO-compatible SAM system, such as the US-made Patriot PAC-3. It is believed that a measure of transfer-of-technology will be involved, though to what extent is not known, though Bloomberg reported that two of the S-400 systems would be "produced" in Turkey.

Erdogan has been critical of Washington for supporting Kurdish groups in Syria that it says are responsible for terror attacks inside Turkey.

Besides the 40N6 missile, which has a range of 400 km, the S-400 also comprises of the 9M96E, 9M96E2 and 48N6, which have ranges of 60 km, 120 km, and 250 km, respectively. The deal is said to be worth around $2.5 billion.
