Emmanuel Macron says Paris 2024 a `victory for France`

Emmanuel Macron says Paris 2024 a `victory for France`

The Summer Olympics haven't taken place in the US since 1996 when they were hosted in Atlanta, though Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002.

The Los Angeles 2028 Games, with a budget of US$5.2b (NZ$7.3b), will essentially follow the plan they had in place for 2024, including housing athletes at the UCLA campus.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, adds to its storied Olympic history. After the IOC's 2024 Evaluation Commission visited L.A. and Paris in May 2017, it issued a report praising both cities and describing L.A.'s bid as "forward-looking, innovative and vibrant".

Hosting a modern Olympics practically guarantees massive debt and cost overruns.

L.A.'s fait acompli presentation lasted 30 minutes with three videos and a series of eight speakers thanked each other, thanked the Olympic movement, thanked Paris and portrayed the self-congratulatory tone that has become the hallmark of some IOC meetings.

Both Paris and Los Angeles made final presentations to International Olympic Committee delegates before the formality of the rubber-stamp vote was taken. IOC President Thomas Bach is already scheduled to light the Olympic caldron at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Sunday.

Athletes will descend on the Golden State for the second time in 34 years when the Games return to Los Angeles in 11 years’ time

The U.S. lost a bid to host the 2012 Games in New York City and another to bring the Olympics to Chicago in 2016.

Swimming champion and four-time gold medalist Janet Evans is on the committee overseeing L.A.'s bid, and she joined the delegation in Peru.

At 1pm (1800 GMT) the International Olympic Committee will vote to ratify the deal, bringing to an end a mostly amicable campaign that has been stripped of the usual drama and intrigue ever since Paris and Los Angeles agreed to split 2024 and 2028 in July. "I am confident that no matter where the Olympic Games would be held. baseball/softball would be a great part of the Olympic sports program". Numerous plans for 2028 are the same as they would have been if they were awarded for 2024. The 2028 bid will bring the Summer Olympics back to the United States for the first time since 1996, when the bid was given to Atlanta.

The Los Angeles City Council unanimously supported the agreement at a session marked by vocal protests last month.

"Now, I know what you're thinking. these LA guys seem pretty laid back", Wasserman said.

But strong opposition and declining support sunk that bid, which died when Mayor Marty Walsh said in July 2015 that he would not sign the host city contract required by the IOC.

Angelina Jolie wishes kin to be a part of showbiz
At the time, the actress discovered that she had a BRCA1 gene that increased her chance of having breast and ovarian cancer. Jolie's daughter, Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt also made a cameo in the film as the young Princess Aurora.
