MI Army National Guard deploying 1000+ soldiers for Irma relief efforts

The deployment was one component of the National Guard response to Hurricane Irma's impact on that island and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

"This is a scalable operation", said Joint Task Force Air Component Commander Colonel Bradley White.

Even with reforms and stepped-up preparations, federal authorities say people need to recognize local responders can bear the brunt of efforts. The decision was made in anticipation of rough seas and possible gale force winds resulting from Hurricane Irma, despite its westerly path.

On Friday afternoon, Hurricane Irma was still trekking west-northwest between Cuba and the Bahamas.

The unit, deployed numerous times for overseas and domestic duty, including Iraq and Superstorm Sandy, departed the Cape May Armory Friday en route to Florida, where Hurricane Irma is expected to strike this weekend. "Just as NY stood shoulder to shoulder with Texas and Louisiana during Hurricane Harvey, we stand ready to provide any support and assistance we can for our neighbors in need". The unit is equipped with high-wheeled vehicles.

Members of the U.S. Army, National Guard and Air National Guard hit the road Sunday morning to help those in Florida affected by Hurricane Irma. The Ohio National Guard is sending as many as 3,500 Ohio soldiers. But, many of their fellow soldiers are heading out of town; a call to service they're familiar with.

The fleet brings a host of capabilities, such as medical support, maritime security, logistical support, assessment tools, security and water purification systems.

The hurricane was headed for the Turks and Caicos Islands on Thursday.
