Preview: West Indies go into Thursday's third and deciding Test at Lord's with the chance to complete a dramatic turnaround and win their first series in England in nearly 30 years.

Mark Stoneman was caught behind for one off Kemar Roach before fellow left-handed opener Alastair Cook (10) fell in similar fashion.

The worldwide fixture list announced by the England and Wales Cricket Board also confirms there will, as expected, be no day-night Test next year.

Even after the fourth day of a match of fluctuating fortunes, ex-England captain Nasser Hussain - a former Essex team-mate of West Indies coach Stuart Law - said the tourists were flagging because the physical demands of a Test match were greater than that of Twenty20 cricket.

Root said: "He passed all the fitness tests and seemed fit. but it is hard to balance between being physically fit and bowling the right amount in games".

Legendary fast bowler Michael Holding on Wednesday dismissed Brian Lara's criticism of his conduct during West Indies' 1980 tour of New Zealand, saying he has "never been interested" in the batting great's opinions.

It meant Stokes took centre stage once again by the end of the day, reaching the close unbeaten on 13 alongside Dawid Malan to help his side to 46 for four by the close.

Roland-Jones made a huge impact on his Test debut in July, taking five for 57 against South Africa at The Oval, and has accumulated 14 wickets across his three appearances this summer.

Yet in both word and deed Root has acknowledged how important winning this final Test is not only for momentum but also historical record given West Indies have not won a series in England since 1988. Powell's 39 was the highest score of the match so far.

No doubt Stokes was as mystified at being ignored for so long at Headingley where he bowled just five overs in the West Indies second innings.

After a 40-minute rain break, Kyle Hope was out for a duck when, trying to withdraw his bat to Anderson, he was well caught by diving wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow.

At that moment, Anderson had taken two wickets for no runs in 12 balls and Windies were 22 for 2.

Root has pointed to Roland-Jones' home-ground knowledge for the decision, as England attempt to bounce back from a surprise five-wicket defeat in the second Test at Headingley. No one can ever take that away from you'.

That wasn't going to be on this occasion, though, as Root gave Holder his second wicket, Powell hanging on to the chance at first slip.
