He said any mandatory evacuation order would at least involve coastal counties but could include additional counties depending on where the storm would most likely make landfall.

Gov. Nathan Deal on Wednesday declared a state of emergency for six Georgia coastal counties ahead of Hurricane Irma.

"This state of emergency also ensures aid for the six counties potentially impacted by this catastrophic storm".

A map showing the evacuation areas along the Georgia coast. As of 10 a.m. CDT Thursday, the eye of Hurricane Irma was located about 120 miles southeast of Grand Turk Island and was moving west-northwest at 16 mph with winds of 175 mph.

The storm's exact path is uncertain, but it could affect Georgia and the Carolinas early next week.

"This action will help alleviate the hardship and suffering that the emergency may inflict on the local population, and provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures ... to save lives, protect property, and ensure public health and safety, and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe in all 46 SC counties", Trump's order stated.

Deal said all eastbound ramps of I-16 will close at 8 a.m. Saturday and only westbound traffic will be allowed.

"You need to start preparing for some type of impact", Cooper said.

The order affects the cities of Savannah and Brunswick in Georgia, which has not been hit by a Category 3 hurricane or higher since 1898, according to WSB-TV. Admission to the game is free. The school's on-campus students will be relocated to its Atlanta campus.
