Syria has been using chemical weapons for 5 years. Here's a timeline

"Government forces continued the pattern of using chemical weapons against civilians in opposition-held areas".

The following month, then US President Barack Obama says the use or even movement of such weapons would be a "red line" for his administration. His apologists can try to wiggle away from Obama's culpability, but the fact of the matter is that Obama made the decision not to take out Syria's chemical weapons supply and then made a ridiculous deal with Syria's ally Russian Federation to have the stockpile removed.

The UN is said to possess sufficient evidence to make such accusations. It was among four chemical attacks the commission tallied over the span of its investigation - including the use of "weaponized chlorine" in three other locations. But that conclusion, reached by a fact-finding mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), did not say who was responsible.

August 7, 2015: The UN Security Council agrees to form a panel of experts to investigate chlorine attacks in Syria.

August 2, 2016: The Observatory reports 24 cases of suffocation in Saraqeb, a rebel-held town near Aleppo.

"The parties to this horrific conflict must fundamentally realign their tactics with basic notions of humanity, and the worldwide community must reinvigorate its commitment to meaningful justice and accountability for all perpetrators of crimes, if we are to see a significant shift away from Machiavellian disregard for the interests of the Syrian people and the progress towards alleviating the suffering of civilians", said Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, Chair of the Commission. It said that the attack amounted to a war crime.

Prior to a UN investigation, Russian Federation vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution that aimed to impose sanctions on Assad's regime in March. "The aerial campaign also targeted medical facilities throughout the area, resulting in a severe weakening of their ability to provide assistance to victims of the sarin attack and a consequent increase in the number of civilian casualties. ese attacks constitute clear violations of global humanitarian law and the Convention on Chemical Weapons, the report notes, which the Syrian Arab Republic ratified in 2013 following a previous sarin attack".
