Volkswagen plots T-Roc R

The T-Roc is the fourth SUV from VW, joining the existing Tiguan and Touareg models, as well as the US-only Atlas/Teramont.

The Volkswagen T-Roc is "not like a normal SUV", according to Frank Welsch, VW's head of R&D, speaking to Autocar ahead of the car's official unveiling tonight.

Air conditioning, Composition Colour infotainment system, LED tail light cluster, underbody guard (black) and LED lights in the bumper are included as standard.

Volkswagen brand chief Herbert Diess was left in the unusual position of having to play down the potential success of his newest vehicle, at the launch of the VW T-Roc. The dash of off-cladding on the sides and availability of two-tone paint job makes T-ROC more interesting. "With its functionality, dynamic handling and technology, the T-Roc embodies all good Volkswagen".

In terms of the exterior design, the T-Roc is pretty much what we expected after seeing an uncamouflaged prototype earlier this year.

China condemns new United States sanctions over North Korea
Hua renewed Beijing's call for peace talks and for North Korea and the United States to "exercise restraint". It is the second time since June that Washington has targeted Chinese entities linked to North Korea.

The global version of the auto has been secured with a long list of safety features that include automatic post-collision braking, active land keeping and a front monitoring system, pedestrian monitoring and emergency braking as standard on all models.

The T-Roc may well be the sportiest SUV in its class: There are several driving modes which sharpen its responses, and VW even offers progressive steering, taken straight from the GTI. There's a decent boot of 445 litres, which expands to 1,290 litres with the rear seats folded flat - for comparison, an Audi Q2 boasts 405 litres with the seats up, and 1,050 litres with the seats down. They are being offered partly with front-wheel drive and manual gearbox, partly with front-wheel drive, 4Motion all-wheel drive (including 4Motion Active Control as standard) and the dual clutch gearbox (7-speed DSG). That's probably the right approach, given the youthful demographic the T-Roc is aiming for.

Multimedia equipment will include "Active Info Display" and a sophisticated audio and connectivity system that connects to the internet and apps through a smartphone and the Volkswagen Car Net system. Crossover T-Roc is built on the platform MQB-A0, which will also be the base for a scattering of new products of the Volkswagen group.

If you ask us, the production T-Roc is one handsome looking crossover. Optional safety systems include adaptive cruise, a rear view camera, Rear Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitor, Park Assist, Traffic Jam Assist and Emergency Assist.

All models are available with a choice of both turbocharged petrol or turbocharged diesel engines.
