Somewhat favorable conditions should allow the system to strengthen as it moves northward.

Given Gert's movement and forecast, the Canadian maritime provinces and Bermuda will also be spared a direct impact, meaning Gert will essentially be a fish storm - a tropical system only moving over water throughout its lifespan.

A cold front along the East Coast should keep the depression away from the eastern seaboard.

A tropical depression formed Sunday in the Atlantic Ocean and is expected to become a tropical storm later in the day. Storm formation chance through 48 hours are near zero percent, and 20 percent over five days. When it does, it will be given the name Gert.

Is it anything to worry about on the East Coast?

A turn toward the north is forecast to occur Sunday night, and to the north-northeast on Monday. An increased threat of rip currents and high surf will be possible Tuesday, but the rain and wind fields will stay well off shore.

The administration initially predicted that the ocean could see anywhere from 11-17 named tropical storm systems this year.
