PGA Championship: Kevin Kisner holds early second-round lead

McIlroy owns four major titles and has 20 combined PGA and European Tour wins.

Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri carded two-over 72 in the second round to be tied 46th as he made the cut for the weekend rounds of the PGA Championship at the Quail Hollow Club here on Friday.

"I didn't hit a good putt on 17", Stroud said.

"I can't believe Col Swatton (his caddie) did not give him a wedge and start walking, say that's the only choice mate".

The 29-year-old Australian finished tied for 22nd at the Masters, missed the cut at the U.S. Open and was tied for 27th at the British Open. "I don't necessarily know that's the officials' fault".

"I can feel it", he said.

"But right now, it's a tough one because I've go out there and play and shoot decent scores, but when I come off the course, I feel my left rhomboid going into spasm". Inside of my left arm goes numb. I switched it off for a couple of weeks because I was getting married, going on honeymoon.

The world No. 2, who won the 2015 Masters and US Open, has two missed cuts, a 2015 runner-up effort and a share of 13th past year in his four previous PGA starts.

McIlroy paused for the longest time.

McIlroy hasn't won a major since the 2014 PGA and struggled again this week.

He'll tee off in the final group at 1:45 p.m.

"Any week you don't have a chance to win, you've fallen short of where you would like to be", he said. "As I said, the next big thing is April, and that's really what my focus will be on from now until then".

McIlroy said the pain is not almost as severe as in May at the Players Championship when it flared.

Asked if he saw a "low one" out there, he said: "Yeah, but I guess a low round used to be a 61 or a 62". So it's there and I can play 18 holes. If I was injury-free, that wouldn't happen.

McIlroy now has gone three years since his last major title at Valhalla in the PGA Championship.

Bemused by the ups and downs of the game, Lowry said: "This game puzzles me every day of the week".

The world's former No. 1 player has dropped to seventh in the rankings, but came to Quail Hollow Club with what he described as slowly building confidence after finishing in a tie for 24th last week at Bridgestone.

McIlroy already knows he needs rest and rehabilitation to properly end the ache. "We took as much time as we needed to at the start of the year".

"I was battling. I was scrambling well to be under par for that back nine". He didn't putt all that well (70th in strokes gained putting), and the course played differently than it had in the past. Then once I started practicing again, I didn't build up the volume gradually.

'I didn't have it written in a diary from when I was young that I need to win a career grand slam as the youngest ever. He wants time off to make sure it is fully healed.

He might also be wondering how he might have played had he been healthier this season.
