However, it gave up the gains towards the end of the session to finish at 32,273.67, a loss of 51.74 points, or 0.16 per cent.

At 2.22 pm, the 30-share BSE Sensex was down 148.18 points at 31,866.01 and the broader 50-share NSE Nifty had lost 50.60 points at 9,927.95.

The Sensex touched a high of 31,967.28 points and a low of 31,731.91 points during the intra-day trade.

Market breadth was in the favour of losers, with about 2 stocks declining to every 1 stock that advanced.

The Sensex, which opened at 31,926.14 points, closed at 31,797.84 points - down 216.35 points, or 0.68 per cent from its previous close at 32,014.19 points.

"Major Asian markets ended on a negative note, barring the Jakarta index".

Back home, actions by the market regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on supposed "shell" companies and the curb on trading by them also continued to weighed on sentiment. While none of the companies mentioned in the circular belongs to large-cap category, experts said the latest order from the capital market regulator impacted the overall sentiment as it has raised concerns regarding the misuse of stock exchange platform for dubious objective.
