Contador to wear number one at Vuelta a Espana after retirement announcement

"One is that I will participate in the next Vuelta a España starting August 19, and the second is that will be my last race as a professional cyclist".

"It's a decision that I have thought about very well and I don't think that there is a better farewell than in a home race in my own country".

But the seven-time Grand Tour victor - who also had two further Grand Tour wins scratched from the record after testing positive for clenbuterol in 2010 - is now keen to bow out in his home country.

Contador is part of a select group of riders in the sport's history, having won all three Grand Tour during his career: the Tour de France (2007 and 2009), Vuelta a España (2008, 2012 and 2014) and Giro d'Italia (2008 and 2015 - the latter being his last Grand Tour victory).

Second only to five-time Tour victor Miguel Indurain in Spanish cycling lore, the 34-year-old Contador has been one of the sport's top riders for the last decade in a contentious career.

"I am sure they will be three great weeks, enjoying all your support and I'm looking forward to it".

At the Vuelta Contador will ride in the status of the captain of the "Trek-Segafredo". But what could come to define his time on the bike for some was the stripping of a his 2010 Tour de France title in 2012.

This year's three-week race features a strong lineup including Tour de France champion Chris Froome and multiple Grand Tour victor Vincenzo Nibali. Though Contador claimed contaminated meat had caused him to fail the test, the ban stripped him of his 2010 Tour de France and 2011 Giro d'Italia wins. Another victory in the Tour de France and Giro from the Spaniard seized as the result of a doping scandal.
