Brother of slain Missouri cop: "He's my hero"

Brother of slain Missouri cop:

Michael had stopped a 2008 Dodge Nitro for a registration violation about 10:45 p.m. Sunday along near the intersection of East Green Street and North Second Street (Missouri 13).

According to information from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a Police Officer in was shot and killed Sunday night in western-Missouri's Clinton. He then got out of his auto and fired shots at the officer, killing him, Lowe said.

Experts at first named Ian McCarthy of Clinton, the individual to whom the auto was enlisted, as a man of intrigue, at that point later named him a suspect.

Investigators told ABC News Monday that Michael initially pulled over the driver because the vehicle's headlights were off, and once Michael ran the plates, he discovered the vehicle's plates were also expired. After the crash, police suspect that the shooter fled on foot.

McCarthy, who was initially a person of interest, is considered armed and risky. The driver exited the vehicle and began shooting at Michael, who was able to return fire. Federal agencies have made informal offers to help but have not officially joined the search, Lowe said.

The Clinton Police Department has no body camera strategy, however police were working Monday morning to decide whether there was dashcam video from Michael's auto or reconnaissance video from close-by organizations, Lowe said. In July 2015, he was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

During his trip, Mr Pence condemned Russia's presence in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, with which Moscow fought a brief war in 2008.

McCarthy is also wanted in New Hampshire, where a warrant was issued in 2013 when he failed to show up for sentencing on a disorderly conduct charge, according to court records in that state.

According to David Lee of Missourinet affiliate KDKD in Clinton, "every available officer is in town or outside of town looking for" the suspect. "And right now, Truman Lake's pretty high because of all the rain that we've been having".

Lowe said Monday that the auto Michael stopped is registered to McCarthy. "Nothing has led us to believe that he's left the area, or he's anywhere outside the area. We're still searching the area and making sure that we're leaving no stone unturned". Officials added there wasn't any dash cam footage of the incident.

At the time, former Manchester Police Chief David Mara - then a lieutenant and the department's prosecuting attorney - said it was McCarthy and three others who picked a fight with Pawlick and his two friends who were riding in another auto.

"I'm not angry at this moment", he said.
