Attack on Rahul Gandhi's convoy; BJP youth leader arrested in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday received a hostile reception during his visit to the flood affected areas of Dhanera town in Banaskantha district of North Gujarat.

In a tweet on Saturday, the Congress leader said he respects the sentiments of his party workers.

Another senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal said that it is evidence of that fact that those who perpetrate violence and those who support it are responsible for this. Rahul Gandhi's auto was pelted with stones during his visit to the flood-affected Dhanera in Gujarat but he escaped unhurt.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Congress workers continued to protest outside the BJP headquarters in the state against the attack.

KPCC (Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee) President M M Hassan said that the BJP leadership instead of condemning the attack on Congress Vice President, was "justifying" it.

"In yesterday's incident, BJP workers threw a stone at me which hit my personal security officer (PSO)".

"Levelling false allegation (on BJP) is their politics".

Vice Presidential election 2017: Vote starts for Vice President
Vice-President elect Venkaiah Naidu. "He will do justice for the post that he would hold from today", Javadekar said. Venkaiah Naidu will be the 15th Vice President of India, voting for which was held on Saturday.

"While the people were welcoming him and telling him about their problems, the members of BJP were already shouting political slogans against Rahul Gandhi".

The Congress party has, however, claimed that the accused is a leader of the local youth wing of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is also in power in Gujarat. "When they have themselves done it, how will they condemn it?" he asked. "Respect the sentiments of Cong workers in #Gujarat protesting against admin not filing an FIR against the stone pelting". This is Prime Minister Modi and BJP- RSS's way of politics.

"The attack on Rahul Gandhi is very controversial".

DMK Working President M.K. Stalin said democratic rights of a political party could not be cowed down by violence.

"Narendra Modi, the slogans, the black flags and the stones we don't deter (...) We put all our strength at the service of the people", he wrote.

Banaskantha is represented by six Congress legislators who have been flown by the Congress to a resort in Bengaluru to protect them from being poached before the Rajya Sabha polls. He pointed out that Gandhi is a national leader and his security was the responsibility of the BJP-led Gujarat government which has deliberately neglected it.
