"I wanted to shoot a couple, few strokes less than I did, but for the most part, when you don't really know what to expect going in, it's hard to really set expectations", Curry told the media after his round. He completed three birdies and slotted ahead of two-time PGA Tour victor Frank Lickliter as well as the world's 429th-ranked player, Casey Wittenberg.

Before the round, pro Dawie van der Walt told ESPN that he would be stunned if Curry broke 80 on Friday.

But starting with the ninth hole, he went on a run of five straight pars heading into the par-4 14th.

Only four players who completed both rounds finished worse than Curry, but the pros were impressed, and PGA players such as Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and Webb Simpson posted their support on Twitter throughout the tournament.

"I had to try to take a deep breath and still there wasn't anything I could do to prepare myself for that moment".

"I'm happy with it".

Some of the more prominent tour players also complimented Curry after the first round.

Here's how Steph Curry played in his second round on Friday.

Slightly more prudent bettors might consider picking Curry to make the cut, which is available at a much more attainable +1500, meaning a $10 bet would bring back $150. "I hit some good shots, and it gets you thinking if I had some to time to actually practice and pursue some coaching, I could take my game to the next level". Not surprisingly, van der Walt subsequently tweeted that he was "only joking" about that, but he did praise Curry for his play.
