Trump Says Russia Didn't Help Him Win Election, As Probe Intensifies

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, has again warned President Trump not to interfere with Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing probe of Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election, including contacts and possible relationships with the Trump campaign.

Trump has denied any collusion between his team and the Russians.

Mueller's team is broadly investigating whether any Trump associates colluded with the Russian government in its attempts to disrupt the election. It follows a separate grand jury previously convened in Alexandria, Virginia, by federal prosecutors probing Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Mueller, a former George W. Bush-appointed Federal Bureau of Investigation director, and his team of experienced lawyers, including Deputy Solicitor General Michael Dreeben, are also familiar with Washington courts, and their use of a local jury also makes sense "as a matter of convenience", the source said. Earlier on Thursday, the U.S. Senate introduced two bills with the express aim to limit the ability of Trump to sack the special prosecutor the way he had sacked James Comey the FBI Director when he started investigating deeply into the connection of Trump's team with Russian Federation.

The person who confirmed to The Associated Press that Mueller had turned to a grand jury was not authorized to discuss the investigation by name and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Soon after, witnesses said, one of the men pulled out a handgun and fired six to seven rounds in rapid succession. One man is in critical condition, another was treated and released and the third victim is a teenage boy.

"Given that Mueller inherited an investigation that began months ago, it would suggest that he has uncovered information pointing in the direction of criminal charges".

Grand juries give prosecutors the ability to put witnesses under oath if there is evidence of a crime.

WSJ also reports that in an effort to ensure Mr. Mueller's independence as a special counsel would be protected, Sens. He also said the White House is committed to working with Mueller to make this happen.

"The paneling of a grand jury in situations like this when you have an investigation like this is how they move forward", he said.

Ty Cobb, one of Trump's lawyers, told the paper he was unaware of the DC grand jury and added: "The White House favors anything that accelerates the conclusion of [the special counsel's] work fairly".
