This despite a party whip, which makes it mandatory for lawmakers to be present in Parliament during a vote.

The legislation has been projected by the BJP as a major political outreach to the politically-crucial backward classes and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has time and again highlighted it as a major effort of his government to address the communities' concerns.

BJP President said he was also confident of party's thumping victory in 2019 general elections saying, "We will win 2019 general election even with bigger mandate because of development, good governance".

On the last day of his three-day visit to the Uttar Pradesh state capital, Shah addressed the media and said that establishment of the Ram temple at Ayodhya was a part of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) agenda.

At the BJP Parliamentary party meet today morning, the issue of MPs absence is expected to be raked up again by party leaders. The party president has taken a serious note of it.

In an event in Lucknow, Amit Shah was asked if he would join the Cabinet since he has filled up his nomination to enter the Rajya Sabha as an MP. Now the government has to bring a new amended bill, which must be passed by the Lok Sabha as well.

Putting up a united fight, the Opposition asked the government to vote in favour of the bill with amendments.

More than 30 of their MPs and five Ministers were absent.

Congress also accused BJP of not being serious about the passage of the bill.

The BJP chief said that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched 104 satellites into orbit under the present government.

Shah also said that the whole world has now agreed that India is the fastest growing economy, adding that farmers were now getting money directly in their bank accounts.

The Lower House had already passed the bill, meant to upgrade the Backward Classes Commission from a statutory body to a constitutional body, which will give it powers equal to a court to summon people and inquire into incidents of violence and discrimination against backward classes.
