Ford F-150 becomes the first pursuit-rated pickup truck for police

Ford Motor Co (F) has released the first-ever Police Pursuit-Rated F-150 pickup truck built specifically to meet demands of law enforcement.

Its core is the F-150 FX4 off-road model sold to consumers, but from there Ford makes some significant changes.

The new F-150 Police Responder joins an already impressive range of law enforcement vehicles.

Although you won't see it any time soon in Australia, where the latest F-150 is available from a handful right-hand drive converters, the F-150 Police Responder joins the Blue Oval's growing law enforcement vehicle range in North America, which Ford claims is the biggest in the USA industry. It will be able to hold its own over any terrain thanks to underbody skid plates and 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires. A police version of its Explorer SUV - the Interceptor SUV - is a popular option for police departments, and it also carries a pursuit rating. It's linked to a 10-speed automatic transmission and, of course, four-wheel drive for all the traction it needs.

A standard class IV hitch gives F-150 Police Responder best-in-class towing capability of 3.2 tonnes.

The euro retraced some recent gains as European policy makers gathered in Frankfurt before Thursday's decision on interest rates. The dollar steadied after the implosion of the US health-care reform bill sent it to the lowest since September a day earlier.

Ford has revealed the first pickup truck specially designed for police. The back seats and floor are covered in heavy-duty vinyl so that nasty messes can be cleaned up easily. The latter - and the fuel used while police vehicles sit stationary but with the engine turned on - has come under renewed focus in recent years, for both environmental and cost reasons.

A high-output 240-amp alternator is included to support on-board electrical devices, along with a police-calibrated speedometer and engine hour and engine idle hour meters.

The 2018 F-150 Police Responder will go on sale in the spring of 2018.

Moving onto the interior, police officers will find a column-mounted shifter and heavy-duty cloth front seats with anti-stabbing plates. Still, it's for very different purposes.

"Ford's 2018 F-150 Police Responder is the ideal all-terrain law enforcement vehicle", said Stephen Tyler, Ford's police brand marketing manager, in a statement.
