The Yankees Are Clearly All-In On This Year After Blockbuster Trade

The trade between the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees is set to be announced shortly. Rutherford was the Yankees' first-round draft pick previous year. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year of sorts, with young players like Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez and Clint Frazier getting used to the grind of a full season while New York's well-stocked farm system matures. They boosted their lineup and the backend of their bullpen in a trade Tuesday with the Chicago White Sox that's sending slugger Todd Frazier and relief pitchers David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle to the Bronx.

There are still things that Moncada needs to work on before he becomes a star in the big leagues, but with regular playing time and consistent at bats against major league pitching he may be able to make the necessary adjustments to be a big factor for the White Sox. While they had to give up a package of prospects that included prized outfielder Blake Rutherford to get the deal done, NY filled some considerable holes.

Less than a week after trading Jose Quintana to the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago White Sox continued their sell off by agreeing to a trade with the New York Yankees. The Yankees' first-round pick in 2016, Rutherford comes in at No. 30 at's top prospects and was 36th on Baseball America's midseason list.

Cashman knew he needed to improve his production at the corner infield spots, and it's likely Frazier will team with Chase Headley to man first and third base.

That last part made Yankees fans plenty happy considering Clippard was a trainwreck this season, sporting a 4.95 ERA with 19 walks, 20 earned runs and 28 hits allowed in just 31 innings. On the season, Rutherford has two homers, 30 RBIs, and nine stolen bases.

Tito Polo, 22, was the mystery fourth piece in the deal.

Bruce Levine of 670 The Score in Chicago was first to report a deal was close, with multiple national reporters later saying the same. The Birmingham, Alabama native signed a four-year, $46MM contract prior to the 2015 season, which means he is in the third season of the pact and is still owed $17.92MM. That said, the Yankees are not in a position to win the World Series this year, and shipping away prospects for a six-month rental is a bad idea for the future of their organization. Kahnle, 27, also has a 2.50 ERA in 37 games this season out of the White Sox bullpen.

It was worth a shot for the Yankees when they brought him over a year ago, but Clippard is one of the most-worked relievers in the game this decade.
