Disney Announces Main Aladdin Cast Including Will Smith

As well as locking down the talent involved, it was revealed that the film will not be a direct adaptation of the 1992 animation. Scott, a British actress and singer whose mother hails from Northern India, recently starred in the Power Rangers reboot as the Pink Ranger.

Looks like those rumors about Disney having trouble casting its Aladdin were something of a fantastical carpet ride. Variety reported that Smith had been eyeing a family-friendly film as his next project, after appearing in mostly adult dramas and action films such as Suicide Squad and Collateral Beauty past year.

Mena Massoud, who is best known for his work in TV's Jack Ryan, will play Aladdin.

At Disney's D23 Expo on Saturday (July 15), the company confirmed previous rumours by announcing Will Smith will follow Robin Williams' footsteps as the Genie in the upcoming remake. He initially took interest in taking on the lead role in Dumbo, but later backed out due to scheduling conflicts.

Aladdin is now set to start shooting in August.

Dan Lin will produce the project under his Lin Pictures banner and Jonathan Eirich will executive produce.

New Live-Action Remake: Will Smith, whose credits include "Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air", "Men In Black", "Bad Boys", "I Am Legend" and about 50 other big blockbuster movie titles.
