Calmer weather could keep BC wildfires at bay, officials hope

Chief Fire Information Officer Kevin Skrepnek says beginning today, 300 firefighters and support staff, along with specialized equipment, are due to arrive in B-C from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario. 100 Mile House was evacuated and officials say it will likely remain so for at least another week, due to another fire - the estimated 5,000 hectare Gustafsen wildfire, now also active and zero per cent contained, burning just west of 100 Mile House.

Wildfires in British Columbia have forced Canadian lumber mills to shut and were edging closer to a Kinder Morgan Inc. oil pipeline as hot, dry weather sparked blazes across swathes of western Canada and the U.S.

British Columbia even declared its own state of emergency - its first in 14 years - as it says over 200 fires are burning across the province.

Bob Turner of Emergency Management BC said the situation is still deteriorating. The fires have burned over 40,000 hectares (100,000 acres) of land.

Sacramento television station KCRA ( reports video shot from its helicopter shows at least one structure has been destroyed by the fire. Officials said that the flames were "completely out of control" as temperatures reached almost 38C and fires were fanned by strong winds.

Almost 2,000 people from the 100 Mile House area in the Cariboo were told yesterday they'll be out of their homes for at least another week. "It nearly makes you want to move".

Wildfires have swept across the western US and Canada, forcing thousands of evacuations across California, Colorado and B.C., and prompting military personnel to mobilize on both sides of the border to help battle the flames.

Walter ‎Bramsleven, an official of the BC Log and Timber Building Industry Association‎, said he expects higher prices, but said the fires could also represent an opportunity if the province grants access to the burned wood in the region before it starts rotting.

A wildfire burning in near Summer Lake in south-central OR has destroyed a hunting cabin and an outbuilding, reports the Associated Press.

In Northern California, the Placer County Sheriff's Office has issued mandatory evacuations along four roads near a 2-acre fire burning north of Auburn.

Winds out of the southeast are pushing the fire away from Santa Barbara and toward Santa Ynez, authorities said.

The blaze, which has spread to almost 29,000 acres (11,736 hectares) to rank as the state's largest, is 45 percent contained, up from 20 percent on Monday evening.
